If you live in Wakefield and Tiverton, RI or the 02878 or 02879 areas, we invite you to call our offices in Wakefield at 401-284-3308, or in Tiverton at 401-624-9177, and schedule an appointment with our dental office. During these well visits, we can examine your teeth to determine if there are any ridges that may require dental sealants. This simple procedure can help to prevent you and your children from getting cavities. In fact, this procedure is generally performed on young children since this is when we typically notice that teeth have deep ridges that are susceptible to decay.
Before the sealant can be applied, the teeth must be cleaned, and we will need to determine if any infection or decay is present. If not, we can begin the procedure and will do so by roughening up the surface area with a simple acid solution. Dental sealants are perhaps one of the easiest treatments that you or your child could ever receive. It is non-invasive and completed quickly during any routine visit. With that in mind, there is no reason not to have your teeth sealed if there is a risk of cavities. At Dutchman Dental, LLC we can seal each tooth in a matter of minutes and doing so is as simple as painting or brushing a coat of sealant onto the tooth, so it is entirely comfortable. This liquid material will harden fairly quickly and start working immediately afterward.
The sealant itself is a tooth-colored acrylic and patients throughout Wakefield have called asking us about it as a means for protecting their children from the routine cavities that seem to come with young age. While this treatment is incredibly effective, it is not for everyone. If, for example, your child’s teeth are not smooth, or there are deep ridges in the area where the bite down, sealant can be extremely useful. By brushing the sealant onto the ridges or grooves, it helps to fill them in and becomes a barrier that prevents plaque and acid from attacking the tooth. In those with weaker enamel, dental sealant can work wonders in preventing common cavities. If, however, you or your child’s teeth are otherwise healthy, strong, and without deep ridges – dental sealant won’t be particularly helpful. If you live in the 02879 or 02879 areas and want to know if dental sealants will work for you, call our offices in Wakefield at 401-284-3308, or in Tiverton at 401-624-9177, to schedule a dental examination.
There are times where teeth can be protected by sealant and other instances where more drastic measures are required. For example, if, as is common in adults, the enamel on the outside of the tooth has started to erode, a bonding procedure or a dental crown may be necessary instead. These restorative solutions also serve to protect a tooth from infection but are used once the tooth has already started to experience damage, where a sealant is entirely preventative. Simultaneously, if tooth decay has already set in, the decayed portion will need to be removed, and the tooth filled, prior to placing dental sealant on any of the surrounding teeth. The only way to make the appropriate recommendation is to examine your teeth in our Wakefield dental office.Explore additional topics covered on our website:
